i knead bread

We were feeling rather brave this last Tuesday, and Ari had whined to Cath earlier in the week that homemade bread is nicer and cheaper. So we thought we would give it a bash..... Or a knead....

For Megan's famous crunchy bread
 you will need:
1 kg  White or Brown Bread Flour
4 tsp Salt
10 ml Sugar
1x 10 g Packet Active Yeast
65 g  Butter
650 ml Luke warm water

To keep yourself sane, and children unharmed, it may be a good idea to measure out all the ingredients before you allow the kids into the kitchen.

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius or 350 Fahrenheit...
Mix all the dry ingredients, add the yeast.
Get fingers nimble and rub in the butter with your fingertips until it is well combined.
Gradually add the water, mixing as you go, until you have a soft dough.

Knead for 10 minutes... We allowed the girls to have a good bash at the dough for a while and then we relied on the mixer to do the rest.

Place the dough on a well floured surface and cover with cling film.  Allow to rise in a warm place for 20 minutes.

Knead the dough down.  We shaped one batch into rolls, and a loaf with the other. Cover with a damp cloth for another 20-25 minutes to rise again.

Clean up while you wait, ofcourse!

Sprinkle some flour over the rolls or bread and score the dough with a sharp knife. Bake for 45 minutes or the bread sounds hollow when you knock it.

Tada! You have a house enveloped with the aroma of freshly baked bread and a crunchy, warm  loaf on the table.

Yummy soup {thank you woolworths} and bread.....
