Ok, the reality is, they didn't work as well as we remembered, but the lesson learnt: don't use pretty coloured wool just because you like pretty colours. Use string. Real string, preferably the thick kind. If you really want pretty colours: dye the string. But use string, and they will work.
Once you have cleaned your cans, removed the labels and made sure that there are no sharp edges, carefully make a hole in the centre of each tin with a hammer and a nail. Now you can thread string through the hole, knot and connect it to another can. Feel free to decorate your can with stickers or rectangles of cards that the kids can paint
and stick around the can (see below).

The string cans worked a lot better outside with more open space and less chance of getting
into the tangled mess that we found ourselves in...
