in grandma's kitchen

As kids we used to spend a lot of time around the kitchen table - sharing meals, doing homework, finishing art projects... and baking! We've all left home but the table remains and now my children are getting a chance to bake with their grandmother around the same table.

What makes this recipe so special is that once the basic cookie dough is made, you can divide it up and add whatever extra flavours you like. Our favourites are peanut butter and cocoa but you can also add coconut, cornflakes, ground ginger, or leave some plain.

Batch Biscuit Mixture:

500g butter
250ml sugar
250ml brown sugar
2 eggs
5ml vanilla extract
1 litre flour
8ml baking powder

Cream butter and sugar till light and fluffy
Beat in eggs and vanilla extract
Stir in flour and baking powder

Divide mixture evenly into 6 bowls
Make different variations by adding chosen flavours and mixing well
Shape each portion into a roll, roughly 4cm in diameter
Roll in wax paper and seal in aluminium foil*
Freeze for up to 4 months
Or just chill for 10 mins
Slice and bake at 190 degrees for 10 – 12 mins

*this is a great way to keep the cookie dough for another day or that unexpected play date. My girls had loads of fun rolling out the dough and pressing out shapes with cookie cutters.

A big thank you to my mom, not only for sharing this recipe, but for all the special times in grandma's kitchen!
